What it is — Pipette
A pipette is one tenth of a pip. On EURUSD, where a pip is the fourth decimal (0.0001), a pipette is the fifth (0.00001). USDJPY pipettes live in the third decimal. Brokers display fractional pricing to show finer spreads and fills.
It exists for pricing granularity, not for trading math. Nobody sets a “15-pipette stop” — they set a 1.5-pip stop.
Why it matters — Pipette
- Tighter spread comparison: raw accounts differentiate at pipette level — 0.1 vs 0.3 pips matters a lot to high-frequency styles.
- Scalper math: when targets are 5–8 pips, a 0.2-pip spread gap is 3–4% of the target — pipettes are real money at speed.
- Swing traders can ignore them — rounding to pips loses nothing measurable on 40+ pip trades.
The pipette, one decimal deeper
A pipette is one tenth of a pip — the fifth decimal on most pairs (EURUSD 1.12294), the third on JPY pairs (158.052). Brokers display it because pricing precision is free electronically; half-pip spreads quote honestly as 0.5 instead of rounding. For risk arithmetic, the rule from the pip page stands: count in pips, let the display show pipettes. Convert by dividing by ten: 5 pipettes = 0.5 pips. On a standard lot a pipette is worth $1 on USD-quoted pairs; on 0.04 lots it is $0.04 — real money only in aggregate, which is precisely why sloppy pip/pipette confusion is harmless in display and dangerous in stop distances.
Where pipettes actually matter
Three places. Stop and limit levels: setting a stop “50” when you meant 5.0 (the classic pipette slip) sizes a trade ten times too large — the calculator’s inputs are in pips for exactly this reason. Spread comparison: a 0.9-pip broker versus a 1.2-pip one is a 30-cent difference per 0.04-lot trade — real only at scale, which keeps the comparison honest. Scalping targets: when the target is 6 pips, a 0.3-pip spread is 5% of the trade; the same spread on a 60-pip swing is noise — the scalping page’s cost arithmetic in miniature. Everywhere else, pipettes are display precision — useful for reading the tape, irrelevant to the plan.
Frequently asked questions — Pipette
How many pipettes in a pip?
Ten. Move the decimal one place: 1 pip = 10 pipettes, so 0.00012 = 1 pip 2 pipettes.
How many pipettes are in a pip?
Ten. A pipette is the fifth decimal on most pairs and the third on JPY pairs — brokers show it for pricing precision, but risk math should stay in whole pips.
Why does my platform show five decimals?
Because electronic pricing can — finer display lets brokers quote spreads like 0.7 pips honestly and fills match prices precisely. Your stops, targets and sizing should still be planned in pips.
Do I pay extra for pipettes?
No — they're just finer price display. You pay the spread; pipettes simply measure it more precisely.
