What it is — FOMC
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is the twelve-member committee inside the US Federal Reserve that sets the target range for the federal funds rate — America’s policy interest rate, and the most influential number in global markets.
It meets eight scheduled times a year over two days. The decision lands at 2:00 PM ET on day two as a statement, followed by a press conference at 2:30 PM on meetings with projections. Meeting minutes are published three weeks later, and the Summary of Economic Projections (the “dot plot”) shows where each member expects rates to go.
Why it matters — FOMC
- The dollar is on one side of roughly 88% of forex volume — the US rate path reprices EURUSD, USDJPY, gold and risk appetite at once.
- It is the calendar’s heaviest recurring slot: spreads widen and liquidity thins in the minutes around 2:00 PM ET.
- Guidance beats the decision: markets trade expectations, so a fully priced hold can still move everything.
The FOMC day schedule, at real speed
The Federal Open Market Committee sets US rates across eight scheduled meetings a year. Decision day runs on New York time: the statement at 2:00 p.m., the press conference at 2:30, and — four times a year — the dot plot with it. Our own calendar strip watched one of the adjacent events live: FOMC Meeting Minutes — Wednesday 18:00 UTC. The minutes, released three weeks after the meeting, replay the committee’s internal debate and can reprice markets on their own. The practical playbook is the same as every red event: know the clock from the calendar, decide in advance whether you are in, flat, or waiting for the press conference to finish — because the first read of the statement is frequently revised by the chairman’s first answer.
What the statement actually changes
Three levers matter. The rate decision itself — mostly priced in advance, which is why an as-expected hike can barely move the tape. The guidance — one added sentence about patience or data-dependence can move markets more than the rate change. And the press conference — the chairman’s tone is the market’s Rorschach test, see hawkish vs dovish. Suppose the statement drops a single word — from “inflation remains elevated” to “inflation has eased” — and rate-cut bets jump the same afternoon. None of this is tradeable blind: it is tradeable with a plan for the two scenarios you named beforehand and a size that survives being wrong about which one happens.
Frequently asked questions — FOMC
How often does the FOMC meet?
Eight scheduled meetings per year, each over two days, plus unscheduled emergency sessions when needed. Every date is published years ahead — see our Economic Calendar.
What time is the FOMC decision?
2:00 p.m. New York time on decision day — 18:00 or 19:00 UTC depending on daylight saving — with the press conference half an hour later. The calendar lists every meeting and the minutes three weeks after.
Why did the dollar fall when the Fed raised rates?
Because the decision was already priced in and the guidance was softer than expected. Markets trade the surprise — guidance and the press conference move more than an as-expected rate change ever does.
What’s the difference between the statement, the minutes and the dot plot?
The statement is the immediate decision and tone (2:00 PM ET). The minutes, three weeks later, show the internal debate. The dot plot, four times a year, maps each member’s rate expectations. All three can move markets because each updates the expected path.
