What it is — MACD
MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) is built from two EMAs (12 and 26). The MACD line = EMA12 − EMA26; the signal line = 9-EMA of that; the histogram = the gap between them. Rising histogram = momentum building with the move; shrinking = it is fading.
Classic readings: a crossover (MACD crossing its signal) flags momentum shifts; zero-line position shows whether momentum agrees with the trend; divergence between price highs and MACD highs warns of exhaustion.
Why it matters — MACD
- Trend + momentum in one glance — direction (zero line) and strength (histogram).
- Crossovers systematize entries for trend-followers, accepting late-but-sure trade-offs.
- It de-noises price action: being EMA-based, it smooths the whipsaws raw candles show.
MACD in one worked example
MACD(12, 26, 9) is three things on one panel: the MACD line (12-period EMA minus 26-period EMA), the signal line (a 9-period EMA of that line), and the histogram (the gap between them). Read a real sequence: EURUSD sells off, MACD is far below zero, then crosses above its signal — the first hint the down-move is losing force. A cross below the zero line’s underside says the trend has flipped; a cross above zero says an established uptrend has resumed. Histogram bars shrinking while price still rises? The move is running out of fuel even before any crossover prints.
Why MACD lags — and what that costs
MACD is built from moving averages, so it is late by construction: by the time a crossover prints, price has often already travelled the first leg. In a clean trend that lag is the price of riding a real move; in a range it is a whipsaw machine — crossovers fire on every wiggle and each one costs the spread. Two honest mitigations: use the zero line as a regime filter (only take signal-crosses on the trend side of zero), and let a higher timeframe vote — a 1-hour MACD buy deserves a 4-hour trend that agrees. MACD never excuses a position-sized-by-hope; the stop and the size still come from structure and the position-sizing formula, not from an indicator panel.
Frequently asked questions — MACD
Why do MACD signals arrive late?
Because it averages. That is the price of smoothing — you give back part of the move in exchange for filtering noise. Shorter settings react sooner and whipsaw more.
What do the standard MACD settings mean?
12 and 26 are the fast and slow EMAs whose difference forms the MACD line; 9 smooths that line into the signal. They are the tested default — changing them changes the tool’s personality, not its honesty.
What is the MACD histogram showing?
The distance between the MACD line and its signal line. Growing bars = momentum strengthening; shrinking bars = the move is tiring — useful for managing a trade you are already in.
MACD vs RSI — which one?
They measure different things: MACD = trend momentum (unbounded, EMA-based); RSI = normalized speed (0–100). Many traders use RSI for extremes and MACD for trend confirmation rather than choosing one.
