What it is — NFP
Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) is the monthly US employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Its headline number is the net change in jobs added, excluding farm workers, government employees and private households — the cleanest read on hiring in the world’s largest economy.
It is released once a month, on the first Friday, at 8:30 AM ET (the rule our calendar’s NFP grid computes automatically). The same release carries the unemployment rate and average hourly earnings — and the previous two months’ figures get revised, which is why a “miss” paired with big upward revisions can flip the market’s first reaction.
Why it matters — NFP
- Biggest scheduled volatility of the month: dollar majors and gold can move their entire weekly range in minutes.
- It feeds the rate story: strong hiring supports higher-for-longer rates; weak hiring pulls cuts forward — the same path the FOMC sets.
- Execution costs jump: spreads widen and slippage grows around 8:30 AM ET — plan sizes and stops in advance with the Position Size Calculator.
The NFP ritual, minute by minute
The US jobs report lands at 8:30 a.m. New York time on the first Friday of the month — 12:30 or 13:30 UTC. Suppose consensus expects 185,000 jobs and the print is 240,000 with upward revisions to last month: dollar up, gold down, USDJPY gaps a big figure — all within a minute. The experienced ritual looks nothing like that minute: the calendar is checked days ahead (the calendar and its RSS feed list every release), positions are sized so a 30-pip gap is survivable or flattened entirely, and the trade, if any, happens 15–30 minutes later, when the revisions and the unemployment rate and average hourly earnings have been read and the spread has returned to earth.
Why NFP lies on the first read
The headline number is an estimate from two surveys, and it gets revised — sometimes violently: a +240k print becomes +180k two months later more than once in a decade. That is why professionals read the trio (jobs, unemployment rate, wage growth) and the revision pattern, not the splash. A hot print with cooling wages and a rising unemployment rate tells a different story than the headline suggests. For a beginner the honest advice is boring: on NFP Friday, trade less, later, and smaller — or demo it. The market will still be there Monday; an account gap-through at 8:31 a.m. is hard to undo. Size with the position-size calculator before the week of the release, not after.
When is NFP released?
The first Friday of every month at 8:30 ET (12:30 or 13:30 UTC depending on the season). Our economic calendar marks it as high-impact, with the exact time in your timezone.
What does NFP measure?
Non-farm payrolls counts US jobs added or lost last month, excluding farm workers, and reports unemployment and average hourly earnings alongside. Markets read the whole package — wages often move the dollar as much as the headline.
How does NFP move the markets?
Within minutes: spread widening, slippage, and 50–100 pip swings in USD pairs and gold are normal. The first move is often reversed inside the hour. This is exactly the condition volatility describes — risk that is larger than the chart suggests.
Trading NFP — what are the honest options?
Three, in order of safety: sit it out (flat is a position); trade the aftermath, once spreads normalize and a direction is confirmed on a closed candle; or be in with reduced size and a stop that assumes slippage. If your plan has no NFP rule, it has an NFP hole.

Frequently asked questions — NFP
When is NFP released?
Normally the first Friday of every month at 8:30 AM ET. Our calendar projects the next four dates from that rule, so the grid is correct even offline.
What is a good NFP number?
There is no absolute good — only a surprise versus the consensus. Markets price the difference between forecast and print, plus revisions; a 150k print against a 100k forecast is dollar-positive even though 150k is modest in isolation.
Should I trade during the NFP release?
Most experienced traders either stand flat or wait out the first 15-30 minutes: spreads triple, fills slip, and the first move often reverses once revisions are digested. The second structured move is the tradeable one, if there is one.
Why does a jobs report move the dollar?
Because employment shapes what the Federal Reserve does with interest rates. Hot hiring → rate-hike or higher-for-longer expectations → dollar bid. Cold hiring → cut expectations → dollar offered.
