Ask any forex question and the answer arrives in pips. “How far is your stop?” “Thirty pips.” “What did gold do today?” “Up 250 pips.” This guide turns that unit into something you can actually use: what it is, what it's worth in your account, and how it drives every position size you'll ever take.
The definition
A pip (“percentage in point”) is the standardized smallest price step in forex: 0.0001 for most pairs — the fourth decimal — and 0.01 for JPY pairs, whose prices are quoted with two decimals. A tenth of a pip (the fifth decimal, EURUSD 1.08503) is a pipette — broker pricing precision, not a risk unit.
What a pip is worth (USD account)
| Symbol | Standard lot (1.00) | Mini (0.10) | Micro (0.01) |
|---|---|---|---|
| EURUSD · GBPUSD · AUDUSD · NZDUSD | $10.00 | $1.00 | $0.10 |
| USDJPY | ≈ $6.33 | ≈ $0.63 | ≈ $0.06 |
| USDCAD | ≈ $7.30 | ≈ $0.73 | ≈ $0.07 |
| XAUUSD (gold, $0.10 pip) | $10.00 | $1.00 | $0.10 |
Why the difference? When the US dollar is the quote currency (EURUSD), one pip is a fixed slice of $100,000 — conveniently $10 per lot. When USD is the base (USDJPY), the value floats with the rate.
Worked examples — Pip in Forex
Example 1 — EURUSD mini: You buy 0.10 lots at 1.0850 and exit at 1.0892. That's 42 pips × $1.00 = +$42.
Example 2 — USDJPY standard: You sell 1.00 lot at 158.00 with a 25-pip stop. Risk = 25 × $6.33 ≈ $158 — know this before entering, not after.
Example 3 — gold micro: Long 0.01 lots XAUUSD that moves $3.00 in your favor = 30 pips × $0.10 = +$3. Gold's speed is why tiny sizes matter there.
Why pips matter beyond trivia
- Position sizing runs on them: lots = risk ÷ (stop in pips × pip value). The Position Size Calculator does this inversion for you.
- Spreads are quoted in pips — your entry cost. Compare brokers in pips, not marketing. See our spread guide.
- Targets and R:R are pip math: risking 25 to make 50 is the 1:2 professional standard — check setups in the Risk/Reward Calculator.
Frequently asked questions — Pip in Forex
How much is 1 pip worth?
On USD-quoted majors like EURUSD: $10 per standard lot, $1 per mini lot, $0.10 per micro lot. On USDJPY it scales with the exchange rate: at ¥158 per dollar, one pip on a standard lot is ¥1,000 — about $6.33. For the full per-pair breakdown, keep our pip value table bookmarked.
How do I convert pips to dollars?
Multiply pips × pip value × lots. 40 pips on 0.50 lots EURUSD = 40 × $10 × 0.50 = $200. Our Pip Value Calculator does it for any pair and size.
